Riding a motorcycle is not without risk, however this risk can be greatly reduced by wearing the Right Gear and undertaking further training. Motorcycles, mopeds and scooters make up around 5 per cent of the traffic in Camden, but motorcycle casualties comprise almost 20 per cent of all people killed or seriously injured on Camden's roads. The highest contributory factors for motorcyclist collisions over the last three years were either a 'poor turn manoeuvre' or 'driver failed to look properly'. Camden Council is committed to reducing the number of riders involved in traffic collisions by:

  • Motorcycle awareness campaigns to encourage other drivers to be more aware of motorcyclists and educate motorcyclists on good highway conduct;
  • Enforcement of vehicle speeds and design of junctions to slow vehicle speeds;
  • Improved training for motorcyclists;
  • Improve carriageway surfaces through the maintenance programme;
  • Keeping the highway environment free from unnecessary clutter which may obstruct sight lines around junctions;

Other than getting the essential training necessary to ride safely, one of most important ways to protect yourself riding a motorbike or scooter is to make sure you wear the right gear. Protective clothing is designed to minimize injury in the event of a crash and should include helmet, jacket, gloves, trousers and boots that cover the ankles.  Thick leather and newer materials such as kevlar are sturdier than other types of materials and can protect you better.

You should also wear reflective and flourescent clothing when on your motorbike or scooter. Research shows that many motorists involved in collisions with motor-bikes and scooters will say they 'looked but didn't see' the rider. It's essential you make yourself as visible as possible when going out on your bike or scooter. Drivers should also 'take another look for bikes' when out on the road.

Motorcyclists make up 12% of Bexley’s road casualties and are the second biggest motor vehicle occupant or rider group.  Motorcyclist casualties in Bexley have decreased from 283 in 1980 to 58 in 2010.  We want to maintain this impressive decrease and see the uptake in riders using protective clothing as a key element in continuing this reduction.
