You can do your bit to help reduce the risk of serious injury to those more vulnerable bike or scooter riders around you by following these few simple tips:

  • Collisions involving bike and scooter riders most commonly happen at road junctions when the other vehicle is turning right. So keep your eyes peeled for approaching riders and ALWAYS take an extra look before pulling out.
  • Some riders use the unique mobility of a bike or scooter to weave in and out of slow moving traffic, so keep checking your mirrors - especially if you're manoeuvring to change lanes.
  • Watch out for undertakers! If you're about to turn left, give your nearside mirror a final check in case a rider is trying to squeeze past on the wrong side.
  • When you're parked, NEVER open your door without making sure that the road behind is completely clear, with no possibility of a rider suddenly emerging from the traffic alongside.

As a driver, have you ever 'Looked But Failed To See' an oncoming bike or scooter?

If the answer is 'yes' you are not alone: it is the biggest single contributory factor in collisions. A third of all crashes occur because the driver doesn't see the rider approaching despite the driver checking to make sure the way is clear.

One of the reasons is known as inattentional blindness - when we fail to perceive things that are in plain sight.
